The beautiful Satilla River flows through Coffee, Ware, Pierce, Brantley and Glynn Counties in Georgia on a winding course to the Atlantic Ocean. Beach-white sandbars, brilliant fall leaf colors, and a variety of animal and plant life create a photographer's dream. The Satilla ecosystem supports wildlife including deer, otter, beaver, raccoons, opossums, bobcats, turtles, alligators, snakes and many birds such as the belted kingfisher, barred owl, great horned owl, and the red tail hawk. But many areas including shorelines and sandbars of the Satilla River are damaged by the intrusion of all-terrain vehicles being driven on the shoreline, sandbars, and the riverbed itself. Other threats include agricultural pollution and the extensive spread of the exotic Chinese Tallow tree.

(left:) The long rays of the late autumn sun filter into one of the many bottomlands or 'river swamp' areas of hardwoods and cypress trees supported by the Satilla river.

Ax, a golden retriever, enjoys a cool October afternoon of exploring a sandbar! A knotty Ogeechee lime tupelo tree to his right has endured countless cycles of seasonal changes on the Satilla.

Snowy white sandbars such as this are continually altered in size and shape by the seasonal river level rise in late autumn and fall in the spring and summer.
